After moving to Canada in 1971, Ruth de Witt faced a struggle finding work. Her credentials as a pharmacist in Germany weren't recognized in Canada, so she switched gears and embarked on a new career, starting work at The Flower Basket.
“My friend owned five flower stores in town and I grew to love it,” Ruth says. “So I made the career change to being a florist and I haven’t looked back.” After 15 years of working for her friend, The Flower Basket came up for sale in 1996. Ruth and her husband bought it.
“Our shop smells beautiful all the time,” Ruth says. “I don’t have a favourite flower, I love them all. The staff and I take the flowers home to test them and gain more knowledge about the flower.”
