Seven years ago, Iva and Mike Stone debuted their delicious cookies at the Downtown Farmers’ Market in Edmonton. They made cookies, set up a booth and approached the local showground without any expectations. The first few Saturdays, they were sold out of everything they had by noon. The couple became familiar faces at the market over the next five years and, in 2012, launched their own storefront.
Iva is the baker of the two. She started baking while studying sciences at NAIT and initially sent out cookies as Christmas gifts, especially cranberry-pecan ones, which are still on the menu today.
While it’s said that baking is a science, Iva’s constant tweaking, attention to detail and extensive research, along with the use of brown sugar and butter, resulted in many successful and inspired recipes.
While the recipes are all Iva’s, Mike manages the business side of things. He says Cookie Love has to have a huge catering component to succeed. Before the storefront opened, the company was called Cookies and Catering, but that didn’t have a retail-sounding ring, so the name became Cookie Love.
