"We're really all about the joy and the enjoyment of dancing," says Sonia Ellis, owner of Seymour Dance. Sonia has been dancing since she was a toddler and, after moving to British Columbia from Alberta when she was 16, she started taking classes at Seymour Dance. "When they needed a teacher, I started teaching, and in 2007 I was offered the opportunity to buy the studio."
Seymour Dance has been a part of the local dancing community for multiple decades. "We have a dance style for everyone,” says Sonia. “There's jazz, ballet, contemporary dance, Irish dancing, hip-hop, and breakdancing, just to name a few." Sonia herself is an award-winning choreographer in a number of genres, including ballet, jazz, and lyrical dance. She is also a fully registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance.
While Seymour Dance offers numerous dance classes for preschool children and up, there is also room for adult students. "The main challenge with adults is to encourage them to just enjoy the dance movements without worrying too much about how they compare to others,” says Sonia.
“We have some people who have never danced before, some who danced as children and are returning, and others who are quite accomplished. But the level is unimportant to us. What matters is to enjoy yourself and improvement will come."
