Good Casual Food
My boyfriend and I dined here earlier this month, to commemorate our first encounter at this restaurant 4 years ago. We managed to convince the hostess to seat us at the 6-person booth (which just happened to be unoccupied to our delight), where we happened to sit when we first met. We ordered the same meal we had during our last trip here, which was the beef burger w/cheese & bacon (yam fries on the side w/mustard), and halibut tacos. Both are great selections. The waitress learned that we were going to share the dishes, and brought out the dishes with equal portions of both meals on each plate! It was such a nice (and clever) touch. It would prevent us from reaching for each others' plate when it came to sharing. We also ordered Japanese pockets as appetizers. Seeing that I am Japanese, I asked the waitress what exactly the pockets were (she didn't know the proper Japanese name), but she could only describe what was in it. They arrived as a trio and were inari (sweet tofu inari stuffed with sushi rice), with a twist Cactus Club style: hard day old rice mixed with mayo, avocado & smoked salmon. While I appreciate how these restaurants are incorporating different dishes, I would be more appreciative (and less offended) if they would use the proper name of the dish, instead of calling it 'westcoast pocket trio'. Restaurants should look to educating their patrons on the dish & origin, rather than attempting to give these dishes a 'hip' name. The halibut tacos were disappointing. They tasted off and when we asked for carbonated water, the waitress suggested we try Aqua Panna - which turned out to be flat water. Upon glancing at our bill, we noticed they had charged us $1.50 for mustard!!! As it was a very special night for my boyfriend and I, we didn't bother to complain about the charge or the fact that she mistakenly told us Aqua Panna was carbonated water. As we left, we had the hostess call us a cab and a cab showed up not even a minute after she placed the call. As we were stepping into the cab, two guys shouted at us that that was their cab! We felt bad, but they were nice enough to let us take it. A memorable evening that refused to be spoiled by the ignorance of our waitress.
