Just a stone’s throw from the steam clock in historic Gastown, you’ll find The Black Frog Eatery. Locals call this friendly hangout their second home, and they are often joined by visitors who come to enjoy delicious pub food and a great selection of draught beer in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.
The pub was opened in 2005 by husband and wife team “Nemo” and Marian, who cheekily named it The Black FrogEatery after their favourite hometown hangout, The Black Dog in Edmonton. The name stuck, and Vancouverites have happily welcomed the duo to Gastown. However, they haven't lost their Edmonton connection. Starting in 2006, when the Oilers made it to the Stanley Cup final, The Black FrogEatery became the place to go in Vancouver to catch the Oilers game on the big screen.
“We didn’t plan that one, but during that season there was a run with the Canucks versus the Oilers and we had a lot of Edmonton fans show up. As soon as people realized we were Oilers-friendly, it just took off from there,” says Marian.
We hit Black Forg last night before the Lions game and loved their vibe. The atrium that provides over half of the seating is ideally situated at the foot of Cambie Street to provide views of the North Shore and the workd going by on Water Street. They offer a great selection of draught and bottled beer and offered a take on a Snake Bite that they should put on the menu and call the Black Frog...who knew that adding Ribena would taste so good! The wings that were hotter than hot were exactly as advertised and really tasty! The only concerns we had were with the mains we had. The steak sandwich was a bit tough to chew as a sandwich but went better when I ate it open faced. The curry and chips were kind of bland and would probably be better as an Indian curry than a Thai curry. We will try other items on our next visit. Our concerns on the food aside, we will be back because it was such a great little spot. Head over to the Black Frog next time you're looking for a fun spot to chill!
