For more than 40 years, the Roundel Café has been a neighbourhood institution. Since 1969, the diner – one of the 10 oldest restaurants in Vancouver – has been delighting the residents of Hastings-Sunrise with its delicious free-range and organic breakfasts, lunches and dinners, all of which are served up with a distinctive retro vibe by some of the friendliest staff members in town.
Although the restaurant has been a staple of the area for years, over the past decade it has gone through a total reinvigoration, courtesy of owner Dena Sananin. The menu now features a wealth of standard and family fare (the Bennys are particularly popular), as well as vegan and gluten-free options, and virtually all of the condiments — jam, hot sauce and ketchup — are made in house. “My boss, she redid everything,” explains manager Sergio Muniz. “The floors, the ceilings, the menu. Everything,” he laughs. “It was a lot greasier, before.”
When we first were discovering the area of Hasting-Sunrise the Roundel was one of the places that we were attracted to. I had a couple of bad experiences there with slow service and never getting my order right, but, we had just moved to the area and wanted to give it another shot.
We went on Saturday and have never had such rude service in my life, from walking away from us when we said we were ready to order to telling us that we better eat our toast as they are throwing too much away. There was no hint of sarcasm in her voice, she had it out for us
I will gladly go up the street to the other breakfast places, and although they don't have a funky coat of paint, they won't be downright rude and treat their customers like people.
This cozy little family-run restaurant has amazing food! Great Vegetarian selection and wonderful service. I ordered the Spicy Tofu Burger for lunch and it was delicious. The baked fries are a must! The coffee is wonderful, and later on discovered it was from J.J Bean. The staff are funky and personably and quick too! I will definitely be back. The menu also has items for gluten/wheat allergies.
