fabulous food is consistent i live in Guelph & i go to Burlington. Just to have a treat in the Thistle Fish & chippy
The fish portion was good and cooked well but price is a bit high. I ordered water with my meal because pop fills me up too much. I was given a very small glass and when I requested a larger one I was told that they are not allowed to use the large pop glasses for water because they could run out!!! Seriously?! Poor customer service. The plates are too small for the portions, I had a mound of fries with the fish on top and no where to properly place the fish to cut into it without the fries going all over the table! What is with the small sized dishes and cups?? The tartar sauce comes in take out packets which is a pain to use as you have no room on the plate for the food let alone tartar sauce! The restaurant is very old and outdated. It could use a little makeover. Comes across as dumpy and cheap but with high food prices. The menus are old and faded and there is very little selection. I might return for take out so that I can eat my Meal on a proper plate and have a decent sized glass of water but I would NEVER eat in there again! We asked if it was seniors day because it seemed the majority of the population that goes there is above 65! Lol.
A bunch of us ordered from this place and I was very skeptical considering I have had some great fish and chips from England. Nothing beats the UK still but this place is good. The chips are good and the Halibut is fantastic. The portion size is great too. It's a bit pricey especially if you want two fish. I didn't feel sick after, the fish was well cooked. The service was great too, they gave us all the condiments and cutlery we needed.
For some reason, the Thistle has a reputation of having really good fish and chips. Over the years, the quality has definitely declined and so has the service. I recently ordered take-out and I discovered it was incomplete when I got home. I went back the next day for an adjustment and was treated very rudely by the person on cash and offered no apology for the error. I was also informed by this person that "they have been doing this for 27 years and have a policy as to how orders are filled" implying that I was being less than truthful about the fact I stated. I have never dealt with such a rude and unwilling person in the restaurant industry. Definitely not worth it.
The first time I had fish and chips from Thistle it was takeout and it was amazing!!! The haddock is the best I've ever had and their halibut is so tender it melts in your mouth!!!! The fish is thick and hearty and the batter does not over whelm the meal. The chips are cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside and tasty on the inside:) The decor is a little out dated and the mirrors everywhere are a little off-putting but if you can get past that then your dining adventure will be most pleasant! The handful of times we have dined in, we have had the same server who is very attentive and friendly and remembers details about us from the last time we visited which makes being there that much more comfortable. They were accomidating to my picky son and brought crayons to keep him entertained. The menu is hugely authentic Scottish and you can order haggis if it tickles your fancy as well. Will definittely go back and recommend this to everyone:)
The fish ,either halibut or haddock is simply the best in ontario. Chips and 'mushy peas' are great. Have been a patron for years and eat at the 'Thistle' at least once month and the service has always been prompt, courteous and friendly. Have never had a "BAD" meal and cannot understand the negative reviews. They couldn't have been there at same time as us!!! Way to go "THISTLE"..Keep it up!!!!
The Thistle prides itself on its fish and chips. I've found them to be mediocre at best. All meals are served on a bed of greasy, overcooked fries. The menu is small and has little room for options and substitutions. Everything is ridiculously overpriced. The dining area itself is a large, square room surrounded by mirrors, leaving one with no sense of privacy. A plus is the staff, who are usually friendly and attentive. I drop in from time to time because it's the only restaurant I'm aware of that has haggis and black pudding on the menu.
MUST GO! AWESOME FOOD! i was going every week for a few years and i love there fish and chips it runs about 12+$ but its very very good the serviers remember you! the only thing i would change is the mirrors! the bread is quite nice everything is always big and you never can eat everything! even the take out is very good! (left overs are okay being heated up!) btw i hate fish and love it at the thistle! ... way to go staff!!
Every time I have eaten at The Thistle I have courteous service and good to excellent food. I was at the terrible reviews i read on the URL The Atmospher was I must admit not the best and does need to be improved, it has not changed since I have been going to The Thistle, and that is a long time. The only thing I can say about the bad reviews it has changsd hands since I was there some six months ago.
I too had a terrible quality meal and was told it was fine after being sent back to the kitchen, I wonder why the people in charge at the Thistle would rather lose normally valued regular customers than replace a meal worth less than ten dollars?? Bizarre. I can name a few other places I would rather be frequenting from now on. This restaurant obviously does not care about their bread and butters' opinion. How unheard of.
We have been regular patrons for about 4 years and always loved the food and service. Recently the quality of both has deteriorated. This week my wife's fish was very watery and "mucky". The waitress asked how the food was and my wife told her. The waitress offered to replace the fish and add some new hot chips. She returned a few mintues later with the same, now cold, meal and indicated that "they" said there was nothing wrong with the fish and it would not be replaced. From then on we were ignored and the bill was rudely "banged" onto the table. As we were leaving I went to talk to the "owners" who told me that there was nothing wrong with the fish and they knew fish for 25 years. I explained that my wife was not satisfied with her meal and the subsequent service and I was told "too bad". There was no apology or offer of a discount - both the "owners" were rude when I complained about their customer service.. Obviously we will never return.
I cant believe they call them selfs the best fish and chips in town,,worst fish ,,soft soggy tasted off,,fries seemed old and i think they redropped in dirty oil. When asked for kictchen to redo the food they told me that it was just fine and expected me to eat my meal that by then was ice cold and pay for it. To bad the owners run their business by the addage that the customer is allways wrong,,will i go back ..not a chance and as a chef i will be sure to tell all my friends. They should not be in business.
This was our first time and we had heard many great things about the place. Well there was a cobweb in the corner near our table. The knife was dirty and the waitress well she was scary and not polite or didn't care. We received a glass that had water in it and the waitress dumped the water out on the carpet on the floor. The pop was warm and flat when we stated something the response was we have been serving it all night and no one else complained. The pop was replaced and still the same very warm and flat, and most of all there was a bone in my fish and we were told no that never happened when I had the bone on the plate.. We spoke to a manager that didn't seem to care neither no offer of discount or replacement this is not good. We will not return to this location the food was not even good we had better and large sizes for smaller amount of money. Watch what you eat.
The delivery corridor I will call it always backed up with people and the counter where you pay for your order has absolutley no privacy when you pay. Even if you preorder your pick up others stare you down when you walk up to the counter to get your order. There should be a separate line up for preorders so you dont have to fight your way through... The Fish is the best in town. We always have a double of each. We continue to go back at least every other week, however, we dont eat in as the line up is always too long. The chip ends as we call them can sometimes be the majority of your order. For these prices they should dump the chips bits and give you fully cooked chips and large ones, not little bits that look almost cauterized. The mushy peas are tasteless and I can only recommend a new supplier. Will we go back??? At least every other week!!! The fish is the best and reminds us of home. Nothing is perfect and they could improve things but if you don't like it then feel free to get cooking. Cheers
Great food, simple atmosphere, quick service. Food was nice & hot, fried just right & not greasy as I've had at other location. Huge portions. Never had deep fried Haggis, it was delicious. I'll be comming back!!
Unbelievable, greasy, soggy fish, under cooked fries, both hot, super greasy! Mushy peas, more like pea soup, not as good, and no flavour. I went because my parents always raved about it, used to order once a week. I've already warned them of the 'new menu'. I feel totally ripped-off, would not consider returning. They shouldn't be in business!!
Went in on a Thursday night, the restaurant was quite busy. The air was very smoky and stale, decor is quite dreary and drab, but the fish and chips were quite good! This restaurant was recommended to us from friends and although we were a little disappointed at the ambience (there really isn't any), the food and service was good and quite swift. The only thing was our fish a little bit dry but the waitress explained that halibut is a less moist fish than their alternative, haddock. Maybe next time we go we'll order that instead. Perhaps a freshening up of the dining room will entice people to keep coming back. All in all an ok experience.
I have eaten the Halibut Fish and Chips about 10 times and it is always delicious and the portion is good. The price is competitive although I wish they included coleslaw in the dinner. I ordered a side of coleslaw and thought it was good but way over-priced.
Great Steak & Onion Pie. Best Homemade Chips around. Nice friendly atmosphere and staff. Wiil be back.
Fish needed to be cooked in fresh oil..... chips were cold & mostly burnt service was slow & when we asked about the menu, the server just glared at us as if we were putting her out.... place was dirty & is in need of a makeover I will not be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
