The food is very good, nice atmosphere and reasonably priced.
Had been here for lunch and enjoyed it, so returned for dinner. It was a very impromptu visit-we were visiting friends after work and they suggested we all go there. My husband and I work in a bodyshop, so needless to say we were not exactly dressed up, but our money spends like anyone else's. People need to remember that!!!! We all ordered drinks while we decided on our meals. No one took our order for a long time, in fact we had finished our drinks and still no one had returned to our table. My husband tried to flag down a server to take our order-which eventually happened- and another round of drinks, unsuccessfully. Then a male server (our original one was female) popped around the corner and told us we were cut off. No one at our table had been obnoxious, no one was drunk, we were all just sitting & chatting. One of our party wasn't drinking so two beers each should not have been a concern as we even had a DD. Our reaction was to pay for our round and leave, but our pals wanted to stay. I had a big beef rib that was pretty tasty, was not impressed with the sides but the snobby treatment overrode everything.
We tried this restaurant because it had just aired on You gotta eat here! Things on TV are not what they seem. The restaurant reminds of the lounge area of a hotel not very warm or inviting. We had the boneless chicken wings and fries for an appetizer and they were tasty but nothing special. The sauce consisted of Franks hot sauce. The fries were crisp so they were tasty. I had a Reuben sandwich with a cesear salad and my husband got the 765 shortribs with mashed potatoes. That is what they showed on the TV show. My husbands dinner was cold! and my sandwich was not hot either. He called the waitress over and she was apologetic but my husband's appetite was ruined because his expectations were high for quality food. I ate my sandwich and shared half with my husband. The pecan pie was pretty tasty although my husband swears the caramel sauce was burnt. The waitress took his dinner off the bill and did not charge us for dessert which was very nice of her. We overheard another waitress apologizing to a different table which is rather troubling in a so called quality restaurant. I definitely would not go back.
I have supported this establishment from it's inception, visiting rather frequently at first and slowly lessening our visits. I am a firm believer in supporting local business. I have been very disappointed several times for various reasons. some examples : slow (turtle slow) service, mixing up orders, forgetting utensils to eat with, taking away beverages with alcohol still in them, getting the order wrong, cold food, mind you not always is this a problem, but sad to say, frequently! Because I am a die hard "support local business" fan, I continued returning, that is until yesterday (Tuesday) where I dinned in for 1/2 price wings, which were actually very good (for a change). It was myself and 2 kids, we ordered 4 lbs of wings and ate all but 3 wings. I asked the server to wrap up the 3 wings and she basically had a bird and wouldn't budge on letting us take our 3 wings home (AGAINST POLICY), so I asked for the owner who I dont know, but but have a mutual recognition from my frequent visits. He would not allow me to take the 3 wings home and told me he had to throw them in the garbage!!! I was so disgusted in the many thanks for my support in the last two years, I paid my bill walked out and decided I , nor my friends, nor my family would EVER RETURN AGAIN!!. I understand this policy because they dont want people ordering 10lbs of 1/2 price wings and eating 1lb and taking home 9lbs of course. But when this so called "policy"( which is only enforced for some, not all) has them throw your last 3 wings in the garbage instead of letting you take them home is just beyond RIDICULOUS and a SLAP in the face for being such a LOYAL customer. Congratulations ARGYLE STREET GRILL, you have managed to alienate customers over 3 chicken wings. Myself, my friends and my family will NOT be returning to this establishment EVER. Oh and for 4 lbs of wings you are alound 2 pieces of celery and 2 pieces of carrots to share for 3 people, if you want more, like say 1 each, you have to pay extra. Just thought I'd throw that in there lol. Save your money, go elsewhere
Most items I have ordered were skimpy, The best thing on the menu I have found is the Burgers, but they are almost tasteless, service was not very good, waitress forgot drinks Etc. A lot of time it is too cold in the Restaurant
The Argyle Street Grill is a newly opened family restaurant by day, fun bar at night in Caledonia, Ontario. It has made itself a good reputation since opening in 2010. It is known for it’s friendly service, comfortable setting and delicious food. The Argyle Street Grill has gained much publicity for it’s goal to only serve local products, such as meats from local European Edge. The Argyle Street Grill is a single location, rather than a franchise of stores. It’s setting is small, consisting of only a few tables and booths, one bar and a patio dinning set. It style is modern and comfortable. We were greeted, immediately of entering the restaurant, usually by a host/hostess you know or recognize if you are from the area. We were seated quickly and introduced to our server, another friendly face. The food came quickly and tasted delicious.
This restaurant does not exist anymore. It was taken over, renovated and changed into The Argyle St Grill. The new place is completely modern, new food, new decor and is hopping busy.
I was in here when it was the St George Arms....(shudder) and reviewed it then. The new owners redid the place very nicely, service was great and so was the food. Had a seafood dip and can't remember what else, but I did enjoy it all. Would like to try this place for dinner one night.
Our group has been to Argyle Street Grill 4-5 times now and it has been great each time. With being a larger group we have never had to wait more than 20 minutes and the food and service has been great. It has an uptown feeling and is a great addition to Caledonia.
This needs to be put on your "to do list"! The local flavor was a refreshing change. Atmosphere was a perfect combination of neighbourhood pub and quiet dinning room. Guiness on tap was a wonderful surprize.
Upon arrival , we were greeted in a special, friendly way. We were given the fireplace seats and got warm & comfortable immediately. Our waitress was fun and took some kidding very well. Our drinks were just as we expected and appetizers were fabulous. The salmon and linguine were cooked to perfection . Our other 8 neighbours now want to go and we'll do it as soon as we ALL can. It was a busy busy night and the Chef cooked as tho we were the only ones in the place....hot, delicious and presentation perfect. See you soon. R&J New Hamburg Ont.
In a perfect world, every neighbourhood would have a restaurant like this. It's nice enough to celebrate special occasions, casual enough just to eat here 'cuz you don't feel like cooking, or to watch sports in the lounge area. The food we had was pretty much perfect, and a steal at the price. My wife and mother both had the perch and loved it - not a crumb left on either plate. I had the braised beef rib. It took a long time for me to decide because there are a lot of truly interesting menu choices. I chose this dish because the menu goes on about how much time and effort goes into it's preperation. After eating it, I believe it - the beef tender and the sauce almost made me cry. This is NOT gravy from a can or powder! For that matter, the mashed potatoes were made from real potatoes, and the asparagus was fresh as well. I suppose it's sad that it's so surprising to find this! Overall, this place won't change your life or make you find religion, but it's very hard to find any fault with it at all. At these prices, everything exceeds expectations. Of course, now that you've read this your expectations will be higher than mine were, so Bob's your uncle.
First impression ......... an over flowing cigarette butt can, right at the front door, as you walk in there`s missing ceiling tiles and then your greeted by a smell of sour old dirty carpets. The smell of the place is enough to make you want to turn around at the door. We waited to be seated and watched 2 different servers walk past us before we seated ourselves. If we weren`t meeting 3 other people there for dinner we would have walked out. When our server FINALLY came to our table she was rude and never even told us the specials, my husband got up and walked over to the chalk board to read them himself in fear of being snapped at by our waitress for asking. When the other 3 people joining us arrived we had to send the other waitress looking for ours so they could place there drink order. The menu looked impressive ... looked being the key word. Our meals were fast and hot, but not to our liking. Items ordered 1) Chicken fingers and fries. Fries where ok chicken fingers where chunks not fingers and had some spice on them that didn`t taste good. They are a sad attempt at homemade chicken fingers. 2) Fish and Chips. Fries where ok. Fish (haddock) tasted like it had been cooked and then reheated. Fish was small, over cooked and very greasy. 3) Shepherds Pie. I have never seen shepherds pie without corn in it. The mashed potato`s where fake and the vegetables were cut in big chunks and under cooked. 4) Beef Dip. Fries were ok. Beef was so tough you couldn`t bite threw the sandwich. Came with a dipping sauce that tasted like gravy from a can. No toppings on the sandwich or horse radish. 5) Nacho`s and a pound of wings. Nacho`s had cooked peppers and onions with some groose spice on it. I have never seen nacho`s like that before. Always had fresh cut vegetables on top never cooked mushy stuff that made them soggy. The pound of wings looked like a child`s serving. The sauce on them was not medium it was more like mild and why even bother saying in the menu wings come with carrots and celery when you only get one of each. For a small town Pub they need to step it up a notch. Starting with the out dated decor, stinky carpets, disgusting bathrooms and crabby wait staff. Most Pubs serve Pub food, nothing on the menu resembled pub food. What a let down.
Speaking of the live entertainment, The Overplayers are the band I'd come back to see, although Evan Champagne is okay, the overplayers are so much fun, They sound a lot like the Barenake ladies, very entertaining. the place is small, but thhe music is a very nice touch!
Kind of hit and miss here. I like to give places a chance. This time was a bit better. Dragon's Breath wings are good and hot, food was decent unlike the previous times. Service was even improved. Hopefully it continues to improve.
Very friendly Staff, and food was great. Most Enjoyed the live music! Two acoustic performers, "Evan Champagne" and "Carm"...very talented and friendly, they definitely prevented us from bar hopping! We will be back with our friends for another great night!
No mistaking this is my favourite place to eat in Caledonia.
great service, excellent food, and worth visiting again, portion sizes were very small for price hopefully nice visit will be less stingy
Our second trip back to the Arms, this time with friends. Good times, good times. Good Eats and pretty girls... don't tell my wife, I might come back through the week for a pint and a snack, just to visit. What a hidden gem, the arms! One thing I like about small towns is the people. Highly recommended. Cheers.
Great food and very friendly service...a nice change from the previous owners :) Awesome Live Entertainment by the Way ;)
