need more fish choice but ok
Take out. I didn't mind the retro squalor, some might. Maybe this place is in a slump, but I wasn't that impressed. the chips were sort of warm when I got them home (something I thought about when I saw him ladling them from the chip shelf instead of fresh from the deep fryer...guess he was saving those for someone else) and the haddock was adequate. The batter could have coated the fish more consistently. I ate it all however, despite disappointing chips. It wouldn't take much to get this place up to a higher standard, but sorry to say my 1st visit was not great. ok. not the best fish & chips ever by any stretch of the imagination. Also not impressed by the client coughing and handling the ketchup packets at the front desk, though not the proprietors fault. Seedy as heck from the outside, but I liked that. Pull your socks up guys, you could be great!
For over 25 years I have been visiting this restaurant and there's a reason for that: THEY ARE THE BEST! Polite and friendly service, they remember all of their regular customers (myself included) and have kept the food the same: don't fix what's not broken!!
My husband has been visiting this restaurant for over 25 years and we continue to visit regularly, now with our little boy! They are the most polite and friendly people and they serve the best fish and chips around; nothing bad to say about them. :)
This is really simple, excellent fish and chips. It's one of those places that hasn't changed in 30 years, and is fantastic because of it. The fish is fresh and tasty - the batter is excellent, not too heavy, and not overly greasy. The chips are obviously fresh-cut potatoes. The coleslaw is just right, a good vinegar coleslaw laden with celery salt. Oh, and the onion rings? Probably some of the best in the city, they're perfect. The batter is tempura-light, and the onion manages to melt in to the batter, so you don't have one of those onion rings where you pull the whole onion out of the middle on your first bite. The service is fast & friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. Anybody that complains about the food being bland - has to realize that everything comes UNSALTED. You need to add your own salt to the fish & chips. Most people don't realize that when food is bland, it probably just isn't adequately salted.
The best Fish and Chips in the city, I've found nothing to compare to these. I've never had a bad meal here.
This place is honestly the best place to go for fish and chips. Everything tastes fresh and the service is excellent. If you don't believe me go on a Good Friday and ask the hundreds of people who lineup on the streets just to eat there.
Well, its Good Friday and our expectations for a satisfying meal of Fish & Chips were quickly extinguished after a recommended visit to New Toronto Fish and chips on Fifth Street in Etobicoke. A typical dated and unkempt facade greeted us as we approached the front door to enter. Inside, the sense of chaos overwhelmingly demonstrated that the exterior appearance was only a glimpse of what to expect. The greasy smell of deep-fried fish filled our nostrils with a foul odour suggesting the oil hadnt been changed in weeks, if not months. After placing our order and stepping away from the counter, we watched as the same hands that gathered dirty dishes and collected money for the till, also wrapped the prepared grease-laden boxed servings handed off to each customer. After arriving home a few minutes later, we unwrapped our surprise-packages and tasted the efforts of the young staffers working back at the unfortunately exposed food prep area behind the counter. Soggy grease-laden fries were carefully disguising what could easily have been tasteless mashed potatoe wedges. The fish was equally greasy and dissapointing as our appetites quickly vanished while we contemplated whether or not we could keep our stomachs from rejecting the few bites we managed to swallow. Surely, Britain had other ideas in mind when the Fish & Chip concept was born. Somehow, tradition, quality and the sense of English-style pride had vanished amidst a cloud of fryer-smoke and outstretched hands to fill the cash register with hard-earned dollars. What's left, when you can't enjoy a sought after treat of hot fresh crisp chips and lightly breaded tender fish? Its not rocket-science, it's only halibut and potatoes - how difficult can it be?
The food was AMAZING and the waitresses and cooks were very friendly. It was a busy day but George did a very good job satisfying customers with little conversations.
After reading glowing reviews about this restaurant, we finally visited last Friday. The food looked good and the value for price seemed great until I took my first bite. YUCK, I don't think I've ever had a "fisher" tasting piece of halibut and the coleslaw was just down-right wrong! Whatever spice they put in the coleslaw was disgusting (it tasted like it had been dosed with way too much celery seed). So, I won't be back. Even though it's cheaper than other fish 'n chip places, I was so turned off by the taste that I won't go back. I'd rather pay twice their cost to ensure I enjoy my meal.
Great place to eat fish & chips. Prices are very reasonable compared to other F&C restaurants out there. The dining area is clean and the owners and staff are all very friendly. I have gone there for several year and can honestly say that others don't compare in quality or price. Fridays are the busiest, so if you want to get a seat go early!
The food was very good, with amazing portions. The service was phenomenal. If I lived closer I'd go everyday
I have been going to NT F&C since I was a wee lad. I have been bringing friends and co-workers for lunch and dinner for years and I have never had a bad experience. The only opportunity is the tinsy-tiny bathrooms.
Little old fish & chip place, has probably been there for 50 years and it looks like it. They only sell fish and chips and they do it excellent. Hidden away on a residential street, but lots of regular customers coming and going all the time. Fast take out is what I always get and it's only $8. with the tax. I only found out about this place a few months ago from another web site and have been there about 10 times. They have a review about them from the Toronto Star written a few years ago, hanging on the wall.
This is a spot known for years to serve one of the best fish and chips dishes in Toronto. The place is fairly old but clean and the staff are very friendly and responsive to all customer requests. Make sure you dine instead of taking out because you get a coleslaw on the side without any additional charge. But I think it's like that for most fish and chips places. The place not on a one-way street so you would have to enter by Lakeshore Rd. There are many parking places but might have to pay depending on what day.
