Christopher Wong digs a trench in black soil as he prepares some EarthBoxes for a client's backyard. Unlike most gardeners-for-hire, Christopher isn't planting flowers or decorative shrubs. He is not averse to planting flowers — as long as they are edible.
Christopher, owner of Young Urban Farmers, creates vegetable gardens for his clients. His EarthBoxes – self-watering planters – are filled with rich soil, then topped with fertilizer to ensure that the transplanted seedlings get the best possible start in their new home.
"We do all the hard work at the beginning so that you can focus on watering and harvesting once the spring planting is done," Christopher explains. "Even though we use a custom soil blend specifically designed for growing vegetable, we also add organic nutrients and fertilizers to help plants grow faster. They'll also be more pest resistant and disease resistant. They'll taste better, too."
