It was a cramped atmiosphere and the waitress kept pestering us for our order when we had literally just sat down. We ask for clarifications on the menu and manager gave us quick responses that didnt help and acted as if we should have known already. When we finally ordred i had to ask another clarification question and got snapped at again. The food came really quick, almost too quick as if it wasnt made fresh and they brought our appetizers and food all at the same time (the whole meal felt as of they were trying to rush us out for other customers even though we had a reservation). When i got my bento box it came without sushi which was one of my questions asked earlier and the manager than rudly snapped at me across the restaurant saying she was very specific with her explanation of that... which she obviously wasnt cause i didnt get it and neither did any of my friends. We sat after the meal for maybe 5 minutes until we were forced to leave cause they needed one of our tables (we were only a group of 3 so its not like we were taking up a lot of space). Everyone in my group agreed that it wasnt a pleasant atmosphere getting barked at for questions and rushed out as of they didnt care about our business. I have had decent experiences here before but i will now not be a return customer, there are plenty of other sushi restaurants in the area.
Excellent. What a wonderfully authentic hole in the wall. Though the servers struggled in communicating, they were warm and efficient. I have had a lot of great Japanese, and this is right up there. The food was so fresh and evidently high quality. The prices are reasonable as well. Will come back and recommend
serving a bunch of strange Korean Japanese Chinese. Strange not noodles just strange things to their own people (makybe Vietnamese and filipines) sorry cannot be sure or exact
We live nearby and go for lunch/dinner. Unlike the foodcourt style restaurants, you will inevitably pay a little more, but you get what you pay for. The place is very small, so expect to wait for a table unless you have a reservation. The food is very fresh, which adds the value. I feel that Japango is one of the few places in Toronto that truly makes the roll while you wait, rather than pulling one out from the fridge that the master chef mass-produced while on the phone during his shift. CONCLUSION: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, but expect to pay more than at the foodcourt, naturally.
Everytime I go there, the fish is very fresh. Likely the freshest sushi i've ever had. The portions are small for the price though. Also the place is very small, would recommend reservations. The chef's daily specials on fish is always a good pick because it's usually the freshest and best quality fish they have in. The place is small so they don't have many waitresses, this causes them to have slow service.
Extremely average place...yes, the sushi was tasty (something I expect from a restaurant that comes as highly recomended) but they weren't even the best I've had in toronto. They were okay. Portions were smaller than usual, but okay. The maki roll was miniature size. Like you could barely see the roll on the plate. It was about 1/4 of the size of regular rolls...I like it when rolls are smaller than regular Toronto rolls that you can't put in your mouth. But this was so tiny it was actually funny. The atmosphere was good overall...we reserved for Saturday and were kicked out after 1.5 hours. The owners obviously wanted us gone so they can fill the seats with other customers. Which I suppose is fine, but they didn't have to show it so clearly. Overall: There are cheaper places I can get the same food. Wouldn't come back again.
Tiny tiny place, (make a reservations) that has some of the freshest fish you'll find in Toronto with an authentic taste to it. This place serves up intricate and awesome hand rolls (unlike most places that make hand rolls comparable to burritos) Staff is always friendly and kind which gives a homey feeling to it. Will def come back again.
This restaurant definitely serves authentic and fresh japanese food! We ordered a variety of sushi and sashimi and the quality was excellent! Although the restaurant was very busy, small, and cramped, the taste of the food made up for all those other things.
The restaurant is extremely small. One of us had to awkwardly squeeze by adjoining tables in order to get into the bench side of our table. No place to hang coats. It is so small and crowded that one customer had to sit right beside the open side of the outside door. We were able to turn that undesirable option down, when we arrived, because there were still 2 tables available (we had reserved a table). The next customer after us wore his heavy overcoat during his dinner while sitting beside that frigid door. Like some other writers, I'd agree that this might be an excellent place to drop by for a quick lunch e.g. when out doing errands etc. We are "young 60's" and we have eaten in many Japanese (and other ethnic) restaurants in many other countries and in Vancouver, too. We frankly expect more atmosphere and more overall comfort than this one offers. And prompter service. All of the other clientele were under 40, mostly in their 20's and 30's. FOOD: The Japango maki was truly wonderful - although a bit too fiery. (I like hot, but this was far too hot for such intriguing and delicate flavours). The miso soup was the best ever and the sushi dinner was very good. The salad was also very good – it accompanied the set dinners and they used baby greens. A nice change from the more typical iceburg lettuce. We both found the tempura dinner oddly greasy and too heavy with crumbs (or from grease?). The dish was very generous. We did not enjoy the rice. It had an odd flavour and it was too wet. Too much broth? All of our dishes were served - except for the tempura plate. And then we had to wait about 30 minutes for ithe tempura to come! The cooks did not seem overly busy. More than once, we were told by a waiter that our tempura was coming “in a minute”, but we'd wait and wait, but it still did not come. The 3 waiters were very nice, but they all seemed rather disorganized, too. This could be because there was little 'passing space' for the waiters in the single aisle in this tiny place. We were disapopoinged that we were not offered tea at the end of our meal.
This is my fave place for warm rich natural japanese noodles of all sorts. We love visiting this underdog. I like to know if Toronto offers a better place for noodles made in authentic style but for now this is the end all. Nevertheless the fish is always fresh too. I recommend this place and so does my wife. Thanks for reading.
The fish was very fresh - presentation was excellent. Variety was good, staff was good at making recommendations based on their daily shipping and what was fresh! Was very pleased with how they provided honest opinion of fresh fish available and would not sell us fish that they didn't consider to be as good for sushi.
The sushi were awesome as in fresh, tasty, not too soft, and looks tasty already I like how Japango is a small space restaurant that resembles the Japan feeling, and makes eating in there feeling warmer Still hadn't had the chance to try chef's special ($70 per person?), photos of it online was too tempting alone
We went there as a group of 8 and order party plates including tempura, sushi and teriyaki for lunch. The owner? of the shop said we should order more, and I found it was a little bit pushy.
This is definately one of the best authentic Japanese restaurants in Toronto. At this price range (&15-$20) for a sushi combo, they offer the freshest sushi in town. Try some of their creative rolls. Japango maki is a must.
