Kelly Caplette hails from Saskatoon. He got his start in design while working at a furniture shop in his hometown. When he moved across the country to Toronto, he enrolled in Ryerson University to study architecture, but didn’t finish the program and instead, spent his time working as an assistant at a design firm.
Noticing a gap in the design market in Toronto – namely that most of Toronto’s furniture scene is saturated with similar colour palettes – Kelly sought to create something different. LAB Studio Design, Kelly’s brainchild, is a design studio located at Yonge and Summerhill.
Step into the studio and you'll instantly take notice of the bold colours and quirky elements. “We definitely do our best to try and push that envelope and make people see that if you love a certain pop of colour, you’re not going to get tired of it,” explains Kelly. And the focus isn’t just on interesting pieces of furniture. “We really like to engage with wall surfaces, interesting lighting, ceiling and flooring treatments,” he says.
