How fitting that Ravi Kanagarajah’s legacy lives on through soup.
After spending more than a decade in the kitchen at the upscale restaurant Mildred Pierce, the Sri Lankan refugee known as Toronto's "Soup King" opened his own modest eatery in the Entertainment District in 2006. Seven years later, two more Ravi Soups locations — on Queen Street West and in the Junction neighbourhood — were also thriving.
In 2013, tragedy struck and Ravi passed away unexpectedly at the age of 42. But Ravi’s Toronto-based family – his wife, mother, five brothers, 25 cousins and four children — wouldn't allow the mini-chain to wither. Just a few months after Ravi’s passing, the fourth Ravi Soups location opened on Charles Street in downtown Toronto.
“We are a team,” explains Tharmini Kandasamy, Ravi’s widow, adding that his brothers and 16 of his cousins work in the restaurants. “When you are family, you are more dedicated. It really benefits the business, and customers can tell. We work hard to give people 100 per cent satisfaction.”
